Why Twos NZ?

For one week only, One NZ has rebranded to Twos NZ to bring attention to a story that doesn’t usually get much airtime - but plays a big role in protecting Aotearoa’s wild places.

Across the country, the Department of Conservation (DOC) manages around 2,000 toilets, many in remote locations only accessible by foot or helicopter. Until now, checking them has relied on manual inspections - time-consuming, costly, and often unnecessary.

From guesswork to real-time insight

As part of the Connected Conservation programme, we’re helping DOC roll out satellite-enabled sensors in remote toilets, huts and wastewater systems. These sensors provide real-time data on usage and waste levels, meaning rangers know exactly when something needs attention - and when it doesn’t.

It’s a simple shift, but a powerful one:

  • Fewer unnecessary helicopter and vehicle trips
  • Lower emissions
  • Less time spent checking infrastructure
  • More time spent protecting biodiversity

At scale, this approach could save up to $180,000 per year on some of DOC’s busiest tracks — and as the rollout expands, savings are projected to reach into the millions over the coming years.

Why toilets?

Because they’re everywhere, they’re essential, and they’re a perfect starting point.

Toilets might not be glamorous, but they’re a relatable way to show how technology can unlock smarter, more efficient conservation. And they’re just the beginning - the same connected network can support everything from pest control to wildlife monitoring in the future.

So… why Twos NZ?

Because sometimes the best way to get people paying attention is to have a little fun.

By turning One NZ into Twos NZ, we’re using humour to start a conversation — then flipping it into something more meaningful: how connectivity and innovation can help protect the places we all love.

It’s all part of supporting DOC’s Always Be Naturing kaupapa - encouraging all of us to play a role in looking after Aotearoa.

Same purpose. Same network. Just a little more focused on your ones… and your twos.
