One NZ’s Satellite TXT rockets to 2m milestone

Most messages are sent and received under 30 seconds

One NZ Satellite has reached new heights! More than 2 million text messages have now been delivered via One NZ Satellite powered by Starlink Direct to Cell, marking a major achievement in our mission to enhance connectivity for Kiwis and enabling coverage across all of New Zealand.

Sharina Nisha, GM Network Services at One NZ, says: “We continue to reach new frontiers in our mission to remove previous mobile blackspots for our customers.

“It took four months to hit the 1 million text milestone, and just 2 months to hit 2 million texts, showing how useful this service is to New Zealanders and One NZ customers.

“More than 40 types of smartphones are now enabled to text via space. With the first generation Starlink Direct to Mobile constellation now complete, there are more than 650 mobile-compatible satellites providing coverage to even the most remote parts of New Zealand, and most messages are currently sent and received in less than 30 seconds.”

The service acts as a vital safety net, ensuring that people can stay in touch and text for help in emergencies, even in mobile blackspots or during natural disasters that knock out ground-based networks. This covers the additional 40% of New Zealand’s landmass that doesn’t have traditional mobile coverage, including remote farms, mountains, roads, and even up to 20 kilometres out to sea.
