Reducing our environmental impact with recycled plastic SIM cards

Introducing IDEMIA’s HalfSIM cards is another small step as a low emissions operator

In another initiative to reduce our environmental footprint, we are introducing smaller SIM cards, HalfSIM by IDEMIA, a smaller SIM card format, manufactured from recycled plastic.

This represents a significant step towards minimising single-use plastic consumption and carbon emissions associated with raw material sourcing and the transportation of SIM cards. Compared to the standard credit-card size format, these recycled plastic HalfSIM cards reduce carrier material usage by over 50%.

Nicky Preston, Head of Sustainability, says this is another way One New Zealand is helping to create an awesome Aotearoa. “SIM cards are a small item, but when you have almost three million mobile connections each one adds up. We believe every initiative that helps to reduce our environmental footprint, even a tiny bit, is worthwhile.

“Being a responsible telco and low emissions operator is incredibly important to us. These HalfSIM cards are smaller in size, meaning they use less plastic overall, and are also made from recycled plastic. A smaller card means a lighter product, which also reduces the transport requirements.”

The HalfSIM cards are being introduced in One New Zealand stores and retail partners as the stock of existing SIM cards runs out.
