One NZ urges Kiwis to prepare for Cyclone Vaianu to help stay connected

As Cyclone Vaianu approaches Aotearoa, One NZ is encouraging customers to take simple steps now to stay connected during potential severe weather disruptions.

While One NZ’s network is currently operating as normal, extreme weather can impact mobile connectivity if the power supply or fibre lines are cut, particularly in exposed or rural areas. Preparing ahead of time can make a critical difference.

Our teams are well-advanced with precautionary activity, and there are actions One NZ customers can take too.

1. Stay connected: charge your devices

One NZ is reminding customers to ensure their phones and essential devices are fully charged ahead of the storm. Having a charged device can help you stay in touch with loved ones and access important updates if conditions worsen.

2. Satellite texting ready as backup – check compatibility now

If Cyclone Vaianu impacts the ground-based mobile network, One NZ is ready to expand access to its satellite texting service, delivered in partnership with Starlink.

This will allow any One NZ customer with compatible 4G and 5G devices to send and receive text messages via satellite in the affected areas, when traditional mobile coverage is unavailable, provided they have line of sight to the sky.

Satellite texting offers a backup safety net, allowing customers to contact family or ask someone to call emergency services (111) on their behalf if needed.

Customers can check they have a 4G VoLTE compatible phone here.

3. One NZ undertaking 24/7 network monitoring; Enterprise customer support ready if needed

One NZ’s 24/7 Network Operations Centre will be actively monitoring the network throughout the event, working to maintain connectivity and respond quickly to any issues caused by the cyclone.

To support Enterprise and Public Sector services, Starlink satellite broadband back-up solutions are ready to be deployed, for example in case of a major outage, as recently happened in the Banks Peninsula. Our account managers are on standby ready to support as needed.
