One Good Kiwi - helping our charity partners create One Awesome Summer

New charities dropped on OGK this month with some like Red Frogs and Water Safety NZ aimed at bringing about a safer summer for all

Welcome back to our One Good Kiwi roundup for the month of December 2022. We hope you all had a lovely holiday period. It was great to see New Zealanders rallying behind our causes last month, with South Seas Bubblegum receiving $16,120, as they received the most tokens as voted on by OGK users.

South Seas Healthcare is Otara’s largest Pacific health provider, delivering a range of clinic, community and social services throughout South Auckland. Their vision aims for excellent health and wellbeing for Pacific people and all communities. South Seas Bubblegum is part of their Youth Hub that trains, upskills and mobilises Youth Navigators to increase capability amongst the Pacific youth in South Auckland. These funds will be used to continue improving the lives of the communities they serve.

The charities featured on One Good Kiwi in January are;

  • NZ Youth Film Festival – A free to enter film festival which empowers Kiwi youth through film.
  • Spirit of Adventure – The unique sailing experience teaching young people responsibility and life skills.
  • BLAKE – BLAKE’s core purpose is to inspire young people to take action to solve the climate crisis and care about the environment.
  • Kindness Collective – A charity which provides everyday essentials and moments of joy to children and their families across Aotearoa.
  • Water Safety NZ – Helping rangatahi respect the water and enjoy it safely, which is top of mind this summer.
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters – An organization which pairs younger people and older people for mentorship opportunities to ignite youth potential all over Aotearoa.
  • The Lucy Foundation – A disabled person led charity that promotes charity rights through a sustainable coffee trade.
  • Red Frogs – An organization supporting, serving and safeguarding young people at music festivals, an especially important cause as summer events continue.
  • Tutaki Youth – A Taranaki-based organization empowering young people by providing a community that uplifts rangatahi.

For those out of the loop, (do you live under a rock!?) One Good Kiwi is a mobile and web app which highlights different charities each month and gives regular New Zealanders the opportunity to vote on which charity receives the biggest share of Vodafone cash. Vodafone (soon to be One NZ) is giving away approximately $1.2 million every year, so have your say on the charities that mean the most to you.

There’s a tonne of hype around ultra-fast broadband (UFB). Many (myself included), are itching to get a taste of its extra capacity and speed. UFB became a very real prospect when Chorus signs popped up around my neighbourhood. The excitement was palpable. Soon men in fluoro vests were digging up streets. The neighbourhood was awash with anticipation. It didn't last. Chorus stopped laying fibre two houses either side of my place. Like other frustrated users, I won’t be able to add fibre to my online diet until 2018. It seemed that my own slice of gigabit goodness wasn’t meant to be. At least that was until Vodafone announced FibreX.
