One NZ records 64% GHG emissions reduction and 61 grants to rangatahi (youth)

FY25 Sustainability Report highlights emissions progress and reaffirms purpose to a better-connected Aotearoa New Zealand

We are pleased to have today published our second Sustainability Report following our rebrand to One NZ, covering our 2025 financial year (1 April 2024 – 31 March 2025). The report outlines the continued progress we’re making towards our environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments, while acknowledging there is always more work ahead.

During FY25, we made encouraging progress in key environmental areas, including a 64% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and the Scope 3 categories currently measure. This was driven by our transition to 100% certified renewable electricity for all directly purchased power, plus ongoing operational decarbonisation efforts and energy efficiency measures.

We also made headway in reducing waste and improving end-of-life product circularity solutions. More than 64,000 kilograms of operational e-waste was diverted from landfill, and we hosted our first public e-waste drop-off event. Alongside this, we formalised and expanded an initiative supporting our larger customers, including in the corporate and public sectors, to responsibly dispose of unwanted equipment and electronic waste.

“We’re proud of the steps we’ve taken — particularly in significantly reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions plus embedding more sustainable practices across our business and for customers, but we know there’s more to do,” says Nicky Preston, Head of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs. “Sustainability is a long-term journey, and we’re committed to progressing it with care, consistency and purpose.”

At the centre of this mahi is our purpose: creating a better-connected Aotearoa New Zealand. As a connectivity provider, we understand and recognise the critical nature of our operations and we continue to make significant investments to strengthen the resilience, reach and security of our networks.

One of the key developments supporting this ambition during FY25 was the launch of One NZ Satellite TXT, making One NZ the first telecommunications company globally to offer a nationwide Starlink Direct to Mobile service. The service enables customers with eligible phones and plans to send and receive text messages in areas without traditional cell-tower coverage, covering approximately 40% of Aotearoa New Zealand’s landmass, as long as they have a clear line of sight to the sky, providing an additional layer of protection.

“This addresses our most material ESG issue of resiliency, and supporting natural disasters and emergency response,” says Nicky. “We know that digital connectivity is now fundamental to daily life in Aotearoa New Zealand. As such, we have a responsibility to ensure that the networks and services we provide are not only resilient and secure, but also aligned with the long-term wellbeing of people and the environment.”

In our communities, we remained focused on supporting rangatahi through Te Rourou, One Aotearoa Foundation, contributing $2 million to fund 61 grants for youth-focused organisations and individuals.

Other key developments in FY25 include:

  • Over 10 million scam or malicious attempts blocked via network protection tools.
  • A six-point rise in our GRESB Infrastructure Assessment score, reaching 79.
  • A new 10% sustainability weighting introduced in our supplier evaluation process.
  • 97.5% of operational e-waste processed through our new recycling partner diverted from landfill.
  • 16 GWh in electricity savings achieved through network energy efficiency, including AI-driven “micro sleep” functionality.
  • First E-Waste Drop Off Day held, collecting nearly 13 tonnes of community e-waste with a 98% recycling rate.
  • Expanded employee support, including a new menopause benefit and parental return-to-work programme.
