EonFibre launches Zone Direct for data centres in New Zealand’s advantaged zones

Specialist bandwidth infrastructure provider streamlines national and international connectivity

EonFibre, a specialist bandwidth infrastructure provider, today launched Zone Direct, a connectivity solution for data centre developers, hyperscalers, neoclouds and carriers considering New Zealand entry or expansion.

Zone Direct is built around the advantaged data centre zones identified in Invest New Zealand’s Data and Digital Infrastructure sector overview. It covers the full connectivity path from a potential new campus in New Zealand to customers offshore, including diverse regional routes, connections to existing and proposed data centres, cable landing stations, and international capacity.

Invest New Zealand is promoting the country to global investors as a secure, renewable-powered location for data centre and digital infrastructure. Its sector overview identifies six advantaged zones: North Waikato, Taupō, Taranaki, Manawatū, South Canterbury and Central Otago. The zones were chosen for lead time to power, access to high-voltage infrastructure and backhaul fibre.

“The case for data centres in New Zealand starts with renewable power, land and stability,” said EonFibre Chief Executive Officer, Richard Mooney. “Investors also need to know how capacity at a new campus will reach customers in Australia, Asia and the United States. National and international bandwidth is our core business. We want to be part of those conversations early, while sites are still being chosen, to enable efficiencies across the development and operational process.”

EonFibre operates more than 11,000 km of fibre from Whangārei to Invercargill. The network includes metro fibre rings in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch, three diverse routes between the North and South Islands, and the Aqualink domestic submarine cable. EonFibre’s network reaches all the major data centres and exchange sites in New Zealand including the data centre clusters in Auckland of Albany, Westgate, CBD and Silverdale.

Internationally, EonFibre is a co-owner of the Tasman Global Access cable to Sydney and provides capacity on the Hawaiki and Southern Cross systems. It has points of presence in USA and Australia, and partnerships with global operators for onward connectivity. EonFibre provides infrastructure to global hyperscalers, including dedicated fibre networks, subsea cable landing and lit capacity. EonFibre has also worked with Google to build new fibre infrastructure for the Honomoana cable, which lands north of Auckland.

Through Zone Direct, EonFibre will give data centre developers and investors early visibility and confidence around connectivity, including a:

  • Connectivity brief for each advantaged zone, mapping route options, physical diversity and indicative latency to New Zealand’s international cable landing stations and to Australia & USA.
  • Site connectivity assessment during site selection, with a desktop analysis of fibre routes, diversity and resilience for each prospective site.
  • Single point of contact from the initial site assessment through to network planning and delivery.
  • Capability to provide design, build, ongoing operations and maintenance for campus connectivity network.

“Developers want to know how many physically separate routes reach a site, how far it is to the international cables, and how quickly capacity can be delivered,” said Mooney. “Because we hold both the national routes and the international capacity, we can answer those questions and deliver the service end to end, from the campus to Sydney or the United States.”

Zone Direct draws on EonFibre’s existing services: Direct Fibre, FlexWave managed wavelengths of up to 400 Gbit/s, data centre interconnection and international capacity. EonFibre works directly with developers, hyperscalers, carriers and data centre operators, with commercial terms tailored to long-term infrastructure projects.

There’s a tonne of hype around ultra-fast broadband (UFB). Many (myself included), are itching to get a taste of its extra capacity and speed. UFB became a very real prospect when Chorus signs popped up around my neighbourhood. The excitement was palpable. Soon men in fluoro vests were digging up streets. The neighbourhood was awash with anticipation. It didn't last. Chorus stopped laying fibre two houses either side of my place. Like other frustrated users, I won’t be able to add fibre to my online diet until 2018. It seemed that my own slice of gigabit goodness wasn’t meant to be. At least that was until Vodafone announced FibreX.
